Hot Blast
On May 22, 1915, a violent blast shook Lassen
Peak, producing an eruption cloud over 25,000
feet high. This blast also produced a "glowing
avalanche" - or base surge - composed of
extremely hot ash, gas and lava block which flowed
down the Peak's northeast side, enveloping an
earlier mudflow. The charred wood you see along
the trail resulted from this blast.
